Where to surf in Nosara — by level, tide, and time of year.
A local breakdown of Nosara's three main breaks, when to go, what to expect, and who to go with.
Playa Guiones — The Main Event
Four and a half kilometers of consistent beach break, working on most swells, offshore winds through the dry season, and a crowd that's surprisingly manageable for a beach of this reputation. Guiones works best mid-to-high tide. Low tide exposes too much sand and closes out. Aim for the north end for a bit more power, the south end for longer, more forgiving rides. Best months: December through April for clean, smaller surf. May through November for size.
Playa Pelada — For Intermediates
Rocky point break about 15 minutes north of Guiones. Shorter, more powerful, less forgiving. Works best low-to-mid tide. The takeoff is more critical and the paddle-out requires reading the rocks — not the place to learn. But for someone who can confidently surf overhead waves, Pelada on a good day is exceptional. La Luna restaurant sits on the cliff above. Sunset surf followed by ceviche is a Nosara ritual.
Playa Garza — Calm, Good for Beginners
A small bay 20 minutes north of Nosara. Calm, gentle, protected from major swell. Ideal for absolute beginners, kids, and anyone who wants to body surf without the crowd.
Boat Trips to Witch's Rock & Ollie's Point
Two of Costa Rica's most legendary breaks, accessible only by boat — about an hour north from Tamarindo. Witch's Rock is a powerful left over a sandy bottom, best at mid-to-high tide. Ollie's Point is a long right-hand point break that can hold 10+ riders simultaneously on a good day. These are not beginner waves. Trips run ~$150–250 per person and book out days ahead in high season. We arrange these through BZN.
When to Go
Dry season (December–April): Smaller, cleaner surf. Offshore winds mornings. Less crowds mid-week. Best for beginners and intermediates.
Green/rainy season (May–November): Larger swells. More consistent. The real surf season. Roads get rough, but the waves make up for it.
