Which Airport — Liberia, Not San José
Fly into Liberia (LIR), not San José. Liberia is roughly 2.5 hours from Nosara; San José is 5–6 hours over mountain roads. Several airlines run direct flights from major U.S. hubs, and the extra hour or two of flight time (if any) is always worth it versus the extra half-day of driving from San José.
The Drive — What It's Actually Like
The road from Liberia crosses the peninsula through rolling ranchland, then jungle, with the Pacific appearing between ridgelines as you get close. Paved most of the way, with a stretch of gravel/dirt in the final approach to town — normal for the area, not a wrong turn. Dry season (December–April) it's a straightforward drive. Rainy season (May–November) river crossings can run higher; a 4x4 is worth the upgrade if you're renting.
Private Transfer vs. Rental Car vs. Shuttle
Private transfer: door to door, no driving, book through BZN or a service like Terratour. Simplest option, especially with luggage or kids. Rental car: worth it if you want flexibility to explore beyond Nosara — Adobe and National both have local offices. Shared shuttle: cheapest, fixed schedule, more stops. Once in town, Gypsy Cab covers local rides, airport runs, and group transport — save the number on arrival.
Book the Transfer Before You Land
Liberia's arrivals area gets crowded and cell signal can be unreliable right off the plane. Arrange your transfer or rental car before you fly, not after you land. If BZN is handling your stay, tell us your flight details in advance and we'll have it sorted before you clear customs.
