Why Nosara is one of only five Blue Zones on Earth, and how to actually live it for a week.

A local guide to the yoga studios, spas, and slow-living rhythm that make Nosara one of the world's five Blue Zones.

Wellness in Nosara — Yoga, Spas, and the Blue Zone Life

What a Blue Zone Actually Means

The Nicoya Peninsula is one of five places on Earth — alongside Okinawa, Sardinia, Ikaria, and Loma Linda — where people routinely live past 90 with low rates of chronic disease. Researchers point to diet, movement built into daily life, strong social ties, and a sense of purpose (plan de vida) that doesn't disappear at retirement. Nosara sits inside that zone. It's not a wellness marketing angle here — it's the reason the town has drawn yoga teachers, healers, and long-stay guests for two decades.

Bodhi Tree — The Anchor

The resort that put Nosara on the yoga map. Multiple daily classes across styles, a teacher-training program that draws students from around the world, and a campus built specifically for the practice — open-air shalas, jungle backdrop, ocean a short walk away. Drop-in classes are open to non-guests.

Nosara Yoga Institute — For the Serious Practitioner

The longest-running yoga teacher training in town, with community classes for visitors who want depth over a single drop-in session. Smaller and quieter than Bodhi Tree, with a following of returning students who plan trips around the training calendar.

Costa Rica Yoga Spa — Slow It Down

Tucked on the river between Río Montaña and town, this is where you go to disappear for an afternoon — spa treatments, yoga, and a pace that's deliberately slower than the beach-facing studios. Good for a rest day between surf sessions.

Eating the Blue Zone Way

Orgánico is the easiest way in — cold-pressed juices, grain bowls, and the organic produce that shows up on Nicoya dinner tables generationally: beans, squash, corn, tropical fruit, real portions of vegetables. If you're renting a villa and want to cook the way locals do, this is the first stop, not the health-food novelty.

How to Actually Feel the Difference in a Week

One yoga class doesn't change anything. What does: walk instead of driving when it's under 15 minutes, eat what Orgánico sells instead of what's convenient, take the 4pm swim instead of scrolling, and talk to people — the plaza, the surf lineup, the bakery counter. The Blue Zone effect isn't a spa day. It's the accumulation of a hundred small defaults, for as long as you're here.
